Andover’s March 2027 election could feature three candidates competing for two Select Board seats, with incumbents Kevin Coffey and Ellen Townson preparing reelection bids and Richard “Rich” Rainville pursuing a place on the ballot.
Coffey had returned his nomination papers and received ballot certification as of Oct. 6. Townson and Rainville had obtained papers but had not submitted them, according to Andover News’ reporting.
Town Clerk and Deputy Town Manager Austin Simko told the outlet that the activity was unusually early.
“Candidates have been active much earlier than is normally the case,” Simko said.
Two seats available
Coffey and Townson are seeking second three-year terms on the five-member board. Both were elected March 26, 2024, replacing outgoing members Chris Huntress and Annie Gilbert, according to Andover’s 2024 annual report.
Their terms expire in March 2027. Townson currently chairs the board.
Rainville is president-elect of the Andover Rotary Club, according to the club’s website.
The field remains preliminary. Townson and Rainville must return their nomination papers and obtain certification before qualifying for the ballot, and additional candidates may enter before the filing deadline.
How to run
Simko told Andover News that nomination papers are due in early February 2027. The town’s published candidate guidance currently lists the previous election’s deadline, so prospective candidates should confirm the 2027 dates with the Town Clerk’s office.
Under the town’s nomination procedures, candidates must be Andover residents, registered voters, American citizens and at least 18 years old. Before obtaining papers, they must file a statement identifying their name, address and the office they intend to seek.
Nomination papers may be obtained by the candidate or someone carrying the candidate’s signed authorization.
Residents interested in running can contact the Town Clerk’s office at 36 Bartlet St. or call 978-623-8230.
