Drivers on Canterbury Street and Haverhill Street should expect brief closures next week as Andover's Department of Public Works carries out fog-sealing work, a thin asphalt coating that extends pavement life, on both roads.
Canterbury Street will shut down for one to two hours on Monday, July 20, according to the town's weekly travel advisory published Thursday, July 16. Motorists will be detoured via Chandler Circle and Westminster Road.
Two days later, on Wednesday, July 22, Haverhill Street from High Street to the North Andover town line will close for one to two hours for the same treatment. The detour runs along Route 114 and High Street. Drivers heading to the YMCA on Haverhill Street will still be able to reach it but may need to enter from the opposite side of the closure.
Both closures are weather-dependent and timing may shift.
Ongoing projects affecting Andover traffic
The brief closures come on top of several longer-term construction projects already affecting local routes:
Lowell Street water main (Argilla Road to Lincoln Street): Work began Monday, June 8, and runs through fall 2026. Traffic in the construction zone may be reduced to alternating one-way travel, with police details and flaggers on site.
Burnham Road bridge (MBTA): The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority closed Burnham Road in both directions at the railroad bridge on Monday, March 30, for a bridge preservation project. The closure is expected to last through October 2026.
I-495 bridge replacements (MassDOT): The Massachusetts Department of Transportation's project to replace six bridges on I-495 along the Andover-Lawrence border entered its second major construction phase on Tuesday, June 16, at 10 p.m. Northbound I-495 traffic toward Haverhill is now shifted into the median between Corbett Street in Andover and Route 114 in Lawrence. A reduced 55 mph speed limit is in effect through the work zone. The project began in spring 2024 and is expected to run roughly four years.
