Dirt bike complaints dominated Andover police logs for the six days ending Sept. 2, with residents reporting groups of riders on River Road and North Street on four separate days.

The complaints are the latest in a pattern that has prompted Andover police to explore fuel-sale restrictions targeting unregistered off-road vehicles, as we reported Sept. 4.

On Aug. 29, a caller reported a dirt bike or scooter driving erratically in a River Road parking lot at 5:05 p.m., according to The Andover Townsman's police log. The vehicle was also making excessive noise. The next evening, a North Street resident reported about 30 bikes on their lawn at 5:35 p.m. An officer reported the group took off into Tewksbury.

Ten minutes later, another caller reported dozens of bikers driving erratically up and down River Road toward Tewksbury. Police rerouted all the bikes into Lawrence.

The calls continued.

On Monday, Aug. 31, a caller reported about 12 dirt bikes with no lights going back and forth on River Road and North Street at 5:05 p.m. An identical complaint came in at the same time on Wednesday, Sept. 2.

"The operators of these unregistered vehicles operate erratically and at high rates of speed … Given their numbers and unsafe operation, enforcement from a policing standpoint is difficult," Andover Police Lt. Frank Fitzpatrick said in a Sept. 3 Andover News report on the same issue.

Domestic assault, OUI among other Andover incidents

A fire lieutenant reported a woman was assaulted by her boyfriend on Minuteman Road at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 30, according to the log. The woman had bleeding on her head and was safe with the lieutenant. No arrest or charges were listed in the log.

On Aug. 28, an Andover man was arrested for operating under the influence on Main Street at 2:15 p.m. The log did not identify the suspect or list charges.

An Andover man was also arrested on a warrant on River Road at 5:11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 31, after police attempted to serve a New Hampshire protection order.

A caller on Monday, Aug. 31, reported hearing about eight gunshots near William Street at 6:15 p.m. An officer found a father and son who had set off a bottle rocket.

North Andover logs hit-and-run, crash with injuries

In North Andover, a hit-and-run was reported at the North Andover Mall, 350 Winthrop Ave., at 11:11 a.m. on Aug. 29. No vehicle description or suspect information was included in the log.

First responders went to a motor vehicle crash with injuries at 235 Chickering Road and 545 Massachusetts Ave. at 2:15 p.m. the same day. No details on the severity of injuries were available.

Police also made an arrest after a 911 call at Rockland Trust, 247 Chickering Road, at 10:05 a.m. on Aug. 29. Police spoke to an individual about a separate hit-and-run at Brightview North Andover, 1275 Turnpike St., at 5:15 p.m. that day.

An assault was reported at Prescott Nursing Home, 140 Prescott St., on Aug. 29. Assault and battery was also reported at Massachusetts Avenue and Route 495 on Monday, Aug. 31.

North Andover Animal Control Officer Brad DiCenzo responded to an animal complaint at The Roche Trust, 235 Wood Lane, on Wednesday, Sept. 2, and spoke with an individual at Half Mile Hill about animal bites on Monday, Aug. 31.

Multiple larceny and fraud reports were filed in North Andover during the period, including incidents on Great Pond Road, Osgood Street, Pleasant Street and at Pentucket Bank, 1065 Osgood St. Identity theft was reported at Edgewood Retirement Community on Monday, Aug. 31.
