North Andover is hiring part-time school crossing guards at $19.50 an hour for the 2026-27 school year, with positions starting in August.

The Town of North Andover Police Department posted the openings on the town's employment page, seeking guards to work Monday through Friday from August 2026 through June 2027. Hours vary by school location and the district calendar, but the town's Human Resources Department lists the role at 6 to 10 hours per week. An annual attendance incentive of up to $1,500 is also available, subject to the town's attendance incentive policy.

What the job involves

Crossing guards help children cross safely at designated crosswalks after vehicular traffic has stopped, using hand signals, crosswalk warning lights, and available gaps in traffic. Guards must also document vehicles that violate signals or commit moving violations hazardous to children.

The work is entirely outdoors. Guards stand and walk for extended periods in heat, cold, rain, and snow. They must maintain awareness of hazards like sun glare, uneven terrain, ice, and defective traffic signals. The position reports to the Community Services Officer.

Who can apply

The qualifications are straightforward: applicants must be at least 18 years old and legally authorized to work in the United States. A high school diploma or GED is preferred but not required. Reliable personal transportation is necessary.

Applicants cannot be convicted felons and must pass a criminal background investigation, Criminal/Sex Offender Record Information screening at the state and national levels, a pre-hire physical, and drug testing.
