Water main construction on Lowell Street may cut traffic to one lane on Election Day, according to the Town of Andover's weekly travel advisory.

The work on Lowell Street between Cutler Road and Beacon Street is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 3. Traffic may be reduced to alternating one-way travel in the work zone, the advisory states. Police details and flaggers will be present.

The town's advisory notes that timing and impacts are subject to change based on weather and operational factors. The town encouraged residents and visitors to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and follow posted signage.

Three more water main projects

Chandler Circle water main construction, underway since Sept. 23, continues through fall 2026. Traffic is being detoured through Westminster Roadway, Canterbury Street and Lowell Street.

Summer Street water main work runs through Nov. 20. That project detours traffic through Avon Street, Chestnut Street and Whittier Street.

A fourth project on Reservation Road begins Wednesday, Nov. 4, and is expected to run through late fall 2026. Traffic there will be detoured through Lowell Street and Cutler Road.

No paving or sidewalk projects are expected to affect traffic the week of Nov. 2, the town said.

I-495 bridge work continues

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation's (MassDOT) I-495 bridge replacement project remains in Stage 2. Northbound traffic has been shifted into a temporary alignment while new bridges are constructed, and drivers may encounter lane restrictions and periodic delays.

The project covers six bridges on I-495 along the Andover-Lawrence border, all dating to 1962. MassDOT says the bridges are safe but nearing the end of their planned lifespans. The project began in spring 2024 and is expected to run roughly four years, according to a town notice posted in May 2024.

Residents can reach the project hotline at 978-981-8770 (English, Spanish and Vietnamese) or visit the MassDOT project page for updates.
