A moped carrying two people ran red lights at an estimated 50 mph on North Main Street on Friday, Sept. 4. An Andover police officer had tried to pull it over around 9:33 a.m.

The rider of the light-blue moped refused to stop and continued toward Lawrence, according to Andover News, which compiled the incidents from police and fire radio transmissions.

Police did not pursue.

Minutes later, the officer reported the moped had crossed the city line into Lawrence on North Main Street. Two people were aboard.

The incident came one day after Andover police said they were exploring ways to restrict gasoline sales to unregistered off-road vehicles. Lt. Frank Fitzpatrick said on Sept. 3 that the department was looking to prevent the sale of fuel to unregistered off-road recreational vehicles operating on public ways in Andover, as we reported that week. The source did not say whether the moped was unregistered or connected to the broader dirt-bike activity on River Road.

I-93 crash sends patient to Holy Family

Andover firefighters responded to a two-car crash on Interstate 93 North shortly before 1:40 p.m. on Sept. 4. Both vehicles were in the breakdown lane about a half-mile south of I-495. An ambulance transported one patient to Holy Family Hospital. Firefighters cleared the scene shortly after 2 p.m., with Massachusetts State Police remaining on site.

Truck pulls down wires, closes Greenwood Road

Around 3:37 p.m. on Sept. 4, a truck snagged overhead utility lines on Greenwood Road, pulling them down and leaving exposed wires draped over the vehicle. An officer at the scene told the driver to stay in the truck.

Police blocked the road and called for barricades. The road reopened shortly before 7 p.m. after officers cut the wires free and a Verizon worker arrived to assess the situation.

Hotel calls, a wrong car and a dead fox

Police were called to the La Quinta Inn on River Road twice on Saturday, Sept. 5. The first call, shortly after 8 a.m., came after people entering the hotel reported a man assaulting a woman near a black vehicle. Officers determined the incident was a verbal argument. "Everything's cool, calm, collected here. It's just what we talked up as a verbal domestic. There was nothing physical," an officer said over the radio. Hotel staff asked the pair to leave, and police helped them on their way.

Officers returned to the La Quinta shortly after 1:20 p.m. for a guest who would not leave. A housekeeper had also reported possible drug activity in the room. Front-desk staff initially suggested the guest might be connected to a previous knife-attack report at the hotel, but police determined that was a mistake. Officers could not locate the guest and told employees to call back if the person returned.

Also on Sept. 5, police were called to Red Spring Road for a dead fox. An officer found the animal off the roadway and determined it was not a traffic hazard. Department of Public Works crews later removed it.

Confused visitor mistakes delivery car for Uber

Around 3:40 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6, a food-delivery driver called police after a stranger climbed into his back seat and refused to get out. The man had taken an Uber to Andover earlier but apparently believed he was still in Boston. Officers learned his friend lived nearby on Bancroft Road, contacted the homeowners and reunited the visitor with his hosts. Radio traffic indicated a language barrier contributed to the mix-up.

Power outage triggers alarms; small car fire on I-93

A possible power outage shortly after 6 a.m. on Sept. 6 set off alarms at multiple locations, including West Middle School and Post Office Avenue. Firefighters responded to investigate.

On Monday, Sept. 7, firefighters were sent to I-93 North near Route 133 for a reported vehicle fire. Crews found a car in the breakdown lane with what a firefighter described as a "very, very small fire under the hood." They put it out with a water can and found what appeared to be a melting wire. The driver planned to call AAA.

Also on Sept. 7, police checked the Woburn Street area near the Wilmington line after a caller reported a young girl apparently alone near Foster's Pond. Wilmington police checked their side and found the girl fishing with an adult present.
