An Andover Fire Rescue firefighter faces felony charges in New Hampshire after police say he assaulted a 3-month-old baby.

Adam Cole, 33, of Londonderry, N.H., turned himself in to Londonderry police on Monday, Aug. 24, after authorities obtained a warrant for his arrest, Andover News reported. Cole works as a firefighter and paramedic for Andover Fire Rescue. Londonderry police confirmed his employment with the department to WMUR.

Cole is charged with one count of second-degree assault involving a victim under age 13 and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.

He was arraigned Wednesday, Aug. 26. He was released, according to WMUR.

Charges carry up to 7 years in prison

Under New Hampshire law, second-degree assault of a child under 13 is a Class B felony. The charge carries a sentence of up to 3.5 to 7 years in prison and a fine of up to $4,000.

The endangering the welfare of a child charge was not classified in available police statements.

Town places Cole on administrative leave

The Town of Andover placed Cole on administrative leave pending further review, Chief Human Resources Officer Michelle Roach said in a statement. Roach said the town is aware of the circumstances and respects the legal process but will not comment further because the matter involves an ongoing criminal proceeding and a personnel issue.

Whether the leave is paid or unpaid was not specified.

How the investigation started

The charges stem from an investigation that began after the New Hampshire Division for Children, Youth and Families notified Londonderry police that a 3-month-old baby had been taken to a hospital.

Londonderry police said investigators reviewed the case and determined there was probable cause to seek an arrest warrant for Cole based on the baby's injuries. Police did not disclose the nature or severity of those injuries.

Cole's relationship to the child has not been disclosed.

No future court date has been announced.
