A homeowner's surveillance cameras triggered a theft report Monday, Aug. 10, that ended with Andover police telling a pair of contractors to pack up and come back in the morning.

Officers responded around 8:45 p.m. after the homeowner's son, watching the property while his parents were away, reported seeing a man and a woman removing a ladder and construction materials from the yard, according to Andover News reporter Dave Copeland's public safety notebook, compiled from police radio transmissions. The caller also lost access to camera footage, prompting police to consider whether someone had disconnected a camera at the property. All information from the notebook is preliminary and may not reflect the outcome of subsequent investigations.

Officers investigated a white GMC Savana at the scene and determined the individuals were contractors retrieving their own equipment. They were told to leave for the night.

No arrests were made.

Ten people chase two Chihuahuas on Chandler Road

Shortly after 5:30 p.m., police received a report of two Chihuahuas running loose near Chandler Road. Dispatch relayed that roughly 10 people were already trying to corral the dogs.

An officer checked the area but could not initially locate them. Police attempted to determine whether any Chihuahuas were registered in the neighborhood. The search stretched into the evening before one dog was reported found. Andover Animal Control eventually obtained contact information for an owner in Lawrence and attempted to reach them.

Dog rescue turns into driveway dispute

Around 7:15 p.m., police responded to a disturbance after people trying to stop a loose dog from running in the road pulled into a nearby driveway. The property owner confronted them over being on the property, according to radio transmissions.

The parties had separated by the time officers finished investigating. No arrests were made. Police continued fielding reports of a loose dog afterward, including information that the animal had tried to bite someone. Radio transmissions did not make clear whether the dog was one of the Chihuahuas from the earlier Chandler Road call.

Car sits open for 10 hours at Dascomb Road Park-and-Ride

An officer was dispatched around 2:15 p.m. after a caller reported a vehicle at the Dascomb Road Park-and-Ride had been sitting with its doors open since approximately 4:30 a.m.

Police tried to locate the owner, contacting law enforcement agencies outside Massachusetts, but could not obtain a phone number. The weekly police log for Aug. 4-10 recorded no arrests during the period. Officers determined the situation appeared to be an oversight, secured the vehicle and left a card asking the owner to contact the Andover Police Department.
