Two graduating seniors with a shared commitment to protecting the planet will each receive $2,500 from the North Andover Garden Club’s 2026 Memorial Scholarship program.
Sophia DeFillippo, a graduate of Central Catholic High School, will study environmental law at College of the Holy Cross. During high school, she helped organize environmental workshops, expanded recycling efforts, launched textile drives and served on the Environmental Club board.
James Cohne, a graduate of North Andover High School, plans to study environmental sciences at University of Colorado Boulder. His interest grew during a 2023 summer program at Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park, where he studied ecology, geology, glaciation and the effects of human activity on natural landscapes.
The Garden Club’s Scholarship Committee said the students reflect the organization’s focus on conservation, horticulture and community improvement.
The $5,000 in scholarships is funded through proceeds from the North Andover Garden Club’s annual plant sale, a tradition dating back to 1984.
The sale has become one of the club’s biggest fundraisers, supporting not only scholarships but also garden therapy programs at local senior facilities, holiday wreaths for town buildings and horticulture education programs.
Founded in 1920, the nonprofit club has about 50 active members. Members maintain gardens at North Andover Town Hall, care for the herb and dye gardens at the historic Parson Barnard House and help with community cleanups.
This year, the club also donated a white oak tree to the Town Common as part of local efforts marking the nation’s 250th anniversary.
The scholarship committee works with guidance counselors at public, private and vocational schools to identify applicants. The application timeline for the 2027 scholarship has not yet been announced.
