If you drive I-495 between Andover and Haverhill, expect a few extra minutes on your commute this week.

MassDOT is closing ramps and lanes overnight through Saturday, July 18, as crews begin foundation work for the new Industrial Avenue bridges—part of the $337 million Haverhill-Methuen Bridge Replacement Project.

The biggest impacts are on I-495 southbound at Exit 106:

  • The Exit 106 off-ramp to Industrial Avenue and the Industrial Avenue on-ramp to I-495 southbound will close as needed nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Thursday, July 17.
  • Overnight lane closures in both directions of I-495 between Exits 105 and 106 continue through Friday, July 18.

Drivers should follow posted detour signs and allow extra travel time. All work is weather dependent.

The overnight work marks the next phase of a long-term effort to replace several aging I-495 bridges in Haverhill and Methuen, including spans over the Merrimack River, Route 110/113 and Industrial Avenue.

The bridges, built in the 1960s, are nearing the end of their service life. Construction began last year and is expected to continue through 2030.

MassDOT says three travel lanes in each direction will remain open during peak commuting hours throughout the project.
