Families got up close with baby goats, chickens and bunnies at Pomps Pond this week as Good Pickin' Farm brought its traveling petting zoo to one of the final shows in Andover Recreation's free summer children's series.

The Westford-based farm set up at the Abbot Street swimming hole on Tuesday, Aug. 11, giving children, parents and guardians a chance to pet and hold the animals in their laps during the morning session, the Eagle-Tribune reported. Good Pickin' Farm, a working education farm at 5 Gould Road in Westford, runs a "Farm on the Go" mobile program that includes traveling petting zoos, goat yoga and what it calls "Farm Fables," according to the farm's website.

The series finale arrives Wednesday, Aug. 12. Master storyteller and song-singer Todd Goodwin performs from 10 to 11 a.m. at Pomps Pond, 147 Abbot St. The show is free and no registration is required, according to the town's event calendar.

The eight-week lineup opened June 24 with magician Robert Clarke and included animal shows, a bubble performance and live children's music. All shows run Wednesday mornings from 10 to 11 a.m. The farm's visit was originally listed on the official calendar for Wednesday, Aug. 5, though it took place Aug. 11.

The series is one of the department's signature community offerings. Andover Recreation generates more than 96% of its operating costs from program fees, donations and special events, making free programming like the Pomps Pond series a deliberate investment in families who might not otherwise sign up for paid activities, according to the department's summer program guide.

Good Pickin' Farm is no stranger to Andover Recreation. The farm also appeared at the department's preschool Farm Day on Thursday, June 25, where children held, petted, brushed and fed goats, bunnies, ducks and a turkey.
